Chapter 30-2: Ethic Minorities Seek Equality

1.) What problems were facing Latinos? What changes were they fighting for in terms of cultural identity? Be sure to identify the following in your answer: Latino, Chicano movement

Problems:
  • Denied equal opportunities: employment, education, housing
  • Discrimination: education, employment, and legal system (led to Chicano movement)
  • Many Latino neighborhoods (barrios) were run-down and had high drop out rates.

Changes fighting for:

  • Cultural pride
  • School: culturally-sensitive courses, better facilities, and Latino teachers
  • UFW: provided educational opportunities for children of poor Latino farmers; protected working farmers (like a union)
